Abstract

There are few studies which examine the relationships between housing provision and residential amenity and the emergence of the 'creative class'. More broadly, there is a lack of research and understanding of the way the housing market operates at the high value end, especially in lagging regions. This paper reviews the (limited) literature on this subject and provides a case study of the North East and survey evidence of the attitudes and experiences of knowledge-based workers. The paper contributes to the emerging literature by examining the role that 'top end' housing - relatively large houses on large plots - may play in attracting and retaining mobile creative professionals in the North East.
