Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

The initial discussion describes some differences anticipated in the manoeuvring characteristics of ships fitted with podded propulsors when compared to conventional arrangements. Model tests for a podded ship displaying course instability are compared to results obtained using pre-defined semi-empirical equations resulting in good agreement. An optimisation routine based on stability criteria is proposed and the resulting design charts are used to identify a stable design.
