Abstract

This report describes the results from an Action Research project which was carried out with scholarship funding from the National Union of Teachers. The research was carried out by two practitioners working with young children at two different schools, to investigate the use of a Thinking Skills strategy, the Odd One Out, for assessment purposes in Number. A range of qualitative and quantitave data relating to pupils' responses in Odd One Out tasks was analysed, and compared to the pupils' results on standardised tests. Findings included significant correlations between those scoring highly on standardised tests and those using multiples of numbers in their responses in the Odd One Out, and a development in the children's comparison,language and reasoning skills related to the use of the Odd One Out.
