Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

Volcanic water-based flows, such as lahars and jökulhlaups, pose significant hazards to communities near and downstream from volcanoes. They can damage or destroy infrastructure, cause loss of life, and induce long-term environmental, community, and ecosystem changes. Economically, they can devastate agriculture, tourism, and local industries. Their deposits can fill river channels and bury floodplains and terraces, but their deposits can also provide sources of construction materials and over time can develop into fertile soils for agriculture. This duality of detriments and benefits from such flows creates socially complex dynamics within affected communities. This chapter underscores the need for comprehensive disaster response, long-term planning, and sustainable resource management in volcanic regions.
