Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

© 2026, Begell House Inc. All rights reserved. The heat transfer performance of mini-scale baffled channels were analysed numerically using Ansys FLUENT 2020 to compare flow conditions through the channel to investigate Nu enhancement associated with the oscillatory flow profiles. Laminar net-flow Reynolds numbers of 100 and 250 were investigated, with oscillatory flow conditions of a 3mm and 5mm amplitude and a frequency range of 0Hz to 45Hz. The velocity ratio, net-flow Reynolds number and oscillation amplitude were all investigated to determine how each affect the value of Nu. The highest value for Nu was calculated to be 61.93 for a net-flow Reynolds number of 250, an oscillation amplitude of 3mm and a Ψ value of 7 (45Hz). The maximum Nusselt number enhancement vs the steady flow case was found to be a 4 fold increase for a Ren of 100, and a 7.6 fold increase for a Ren of 250.
