Published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of Royal College of Psychiatrists. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of BJPsych Open, this Editorialhighlights papers published in BJPsych Open over the pastdecade that have focused on university student mental health.Common mental disorders are increasing in young people andthose going on to higher education make up an important andsizeable sector of this population. At the same time, success inuniversity studies is a major determinant of individual andsocietal health and prosperity. As a field of inquiry, universitystudent mental health research gained momentum through theCOVID-19 pandemic and associated campus closures, pivot toremote learning and social restrictions. Although researchdescribing student well-being and mental health burden alignglobally, not enough is known about determinants that informsustainable and scalable prevention and early intervention.Furthermore, research evidence should inform university policies, practices and benchmarks to ensure responsive andeffective student well-being and mental health support thatunderpins academic and life success.
