The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

© 2026 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.Solar power systems' long-term viability depends significantly on their efficiency levels. Power converter technologies demonstrate improvements but fail to achieve maximum performance at all operational conditions. The interleaved boost converter designs perform their best during intense sunlight, yet their efficiency drops when sun exposure becomes weak; however, the conventional boost converter proves efficient in low sunlight weather conditions. This study introduces a novel method to optimize energy conversion efficiency for solar power systems that operate under different loads and weather conditions. The combination of the interleaved boost converter with the novel switch adaptive control aims to optimize solar systems performance. The calculations and tests showed that the interleaved boost converter with the offered new controller scheme works well than the usual interleaved boost converter, providing higher efficiency and improved overall performance in different operating conditions. This work advances solar power system design and implementation.
