Abstract

In this chapter I elaborate how contemporary youth scholars and practitioners are undertaking research with young people rather than about them. Talking and listening to young people is central to this endeavour. Prioritizing research with young people requires a fundamental shift in our ontological, epistemological and methodological positions in relation to power relations, the production of knowledge, and who has authority to speak and be listened to. Research with marginalized groups of young people can challenge their systemic silencing. Before embarking on research that involves talking and listening to ‘youth’ and ‘young people’, I suggest we start with questions such as: Who am I talking and listening to? On what basis have I chosen age (and/or other intersectional) parameters for my study sample? And who might I include/exclude as a result?
