The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

In this paper, we compare two prevailing overlay schemes for 802.11p, Slotted and Token-based Overlay for Platooning (TOP), focusing on performance in different vehicle densities in a critical braking scenario. We additionally propose GS (Grouped Slotted) which extends Slotted to be an inter-platoon overlay, rather than intra-platoon using grouping to further reduce the number of packet collisions per second and improve the inter-vehicle distances. The results reveal that overall, TOP is safer than Slotted, although it causes a significantly higher number of packet collisions per second. The results further demonstrate that GS outperforms all compared schemes, representing a better solution as it achieves the lowest packet collision rates while ensuring better inter-vehicle distances.
