Abstract

This entry provides a critical review of the manufacturing technology and uses of ancient metals focusing on copper, gold, silver, lead, tin, iron, and their main alloys. The first section offers an overview of metal production methods including alloying, casting, shaping, work-hardening, forging, finishing, decorating, and heat-treatment. The second section discusses key issues and debates on the social consumption of metals, focusing on prehistoric bronzes from Europe. The final section offers concluding remarks and future directions on the archaeological and scientific study of early metalwork.
