Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

Perchlorate (ClO4- ) is widespread in the solar system having been detected on Earth, on Mars, in chondritemeteorites and in lunar samples. On Mars, perchlorates expand the potential for habitable conditions by loweringthe freezing point of liquid water in the formation of brines. In future manned space exploration their presenceposes a hazard to human health, however, it also represents opportunities as a source of oxygen and fuel. Despitetheir prevalence, the mechanism(s) of perchlorate formation in different solar system environments are poorlyunderstood. Here we demonstrate that perchlorate can be generated through the mechanical activation of silicatesin the presence of chloride.
