The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

Towards the era of industry 4.0, there has been increasing interest in developing a safer and more efficient railway transport through the internet of things (IoT) based monitoring. In IoT based monitoring systems, wireless communication technologies inevitably play an important role in bridging data from sensors to the internet. This paper presents an experimental study of sensor and wireless communication technologies for a novel freight monitoring, tracking and tracing system. The study involves implementations of, and experimental investigations on, Bluetooth and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies for condition monitoring and tracking of freight on a rail vehicle. System architectures, implementations, and performance aspects of Bluetooth and RFID, such as energy consumption, range, and reliability, are discussed in the paper.
