Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

A new set of stress intensity factor (SIF) parametric equation to predict weight function and stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface saddle crack is discussed. With the hot-spot stress, degree-of-bending values and appropriate load-shedding models, it can be used to measure the deepest SIFs for semi-elliptical surface saddle cracks in tubular welded joints. The curvature effect of tubes to the SIFs is identified by comparing the predictions with three-dimensional T-butt weight-function-based SIF solution. A comparison of the predictions with tubular joint fatigue, has shown that this new SIF solution can work well with the non-linear moment release model.
