The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

Multi-energy microgrids promise to bring more flexibility and increase reliability by interconnecting networks. Electricity and gas networks have very different dynamic behaviour in response to a fault or failure. Gas networks also have built-in energy storage which can continue to provide a reliable supply if the gas inputs to the system are unavailable. This paper presents a novel reliability assessment method applied to multi-energy microgrids, which combines an elegant incidence matrix analysis to identify connectivity between sources and load points, with a sequential Monte-Carlo simulation and generation adequacy evaluation. The case study involves an electricity-gas microgrid. The electricity network is a multi-sourced grid, while the gas network is supplied by a biogas plant. The linepack (gas stored along the pipelines) is modelled to account for the slower gas dynamics. The proposed method is demonstrated on a real-world electricity distribution network in Austria. Results illustrate the reliability benefits of forming a multi-energy microgrid.
