Abstract

At a time when new policy guidelines to combat childhood poverty and social exclusion are being implemented around best practice in health and social care, this article focuses on experiences of care and support for parents with a disabled child or children. Drawing on in-depth qualitative data, the author reflects on the ways in which existing social hierarchies have an impact on how service provision may be offered and received. The article concludes with a discussion on the types of care that might be considered enabling and identifies areas where services, and service representatives, might still do better to challenge the disabling assumptions and work practices around the child and family.
