Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy remains the most common single cause of end-stage renal failure and is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This article discusses: the pathophysiology of nephropathy; its staging by albuminuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate; and the evidence for prevention and treatment. A multifactorial approach addressing known cardiovascular disease risk factors is required for most people with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.
