How language teachers become effective users of CALL for online teaching and learning: a case study of their developmental processes in a transformative e-training course

Abstract

This chapterpresents an exploratory case study of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in-service teachers in Chile who participated voluntarily in an online teacher training course in order to develop their CALL competence for online teaching. The e-training was delivered on Moodle and guided by an online tutor for eight weeks. The design of the course adopted socio-constructivist approaches as a means to foster sustainable reflection and collaboration among the teachers. Data were gathered and analysed using a mixed-methods research design. Findings show that the teachers improved their confidence in, and understanding of how to teach language effectively online. Additionally, although the detailed content of the training course will have to change as technology changes, the transferability to new situations of the reflective thinking and collaboration techniques, and the reusability of the online training methodology, confirm the sustainability of this approach for L2 teacher development in CALL.
