The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

In low-temperature superfluid helium, viscosity is zero and vorticity takes the form of discrete vortex filamentsof fixed circulation and atomic thickness. We present numerical evidence of three-dimensional inverse energytransfer from small length scales to large length scales in superfluid turbulence generated by a flow of vortexrings. We argue that the effect arises from the anisotropy of the flow, which favors vortex reconnections of vortexloops of the same polarity, and that it has been indirectly observed in the laboratory. The effect opens questionsabout analogies with related processes in ordinary turbulence.
